How face search works

1. Upload a clear photo

Choose a well-lit, front-facing photo with one visible adult face. A close crop helps separate facial detail from the background. Check the image preview before searching; blur, extreme angles, compression and occlusion can all reduce useful detail.

2. Compare facial features

Face search systems compare numerical representations of visual facial features rather than requiring identical pixels. The extraction method depends on the connected search engine. Similar features can occur in unrelated people, so a match must always be reviewed in context.

3. Review public-source matches

Open the original page, check its publication date and compare the surrounding context. A thumbnail may be outdated or reused. Similarity scores describe a model comparison, not the probability of a person’s identity.

What a face finder match can and cannot tell you

Visual similarity is not legal identity

Doppelgängers, low-resolution artifacts and false positives can produce convincing similarities. A face lookup cannot establish a legal name, consent, relationships or a person’s intentions. Never use a match for consequential decisions about another person.

Why source date and page context matter

A repost may be newer than the original photograph. Check captions, the publisher and the earliest available publication date. Dates may describe page updates rather than the original image; a source link is a starting point for verification.

Face search vs reverse image search

The two methods answer different questions. Use both when you need to understand a photograph’s provenance.

REAL-WORLD SOCIAL VERIFICATION

Don’t get played by a stolen photo

A dating profile looks too good to be true? Compare the photo’s original sources, captions and publication dates. A reused image is a reason to verify the story.

Different context?

Example scenario: three public pages share a photo. An older post may help explain its origin; it does not prove who controls a dating profile.

Coverage and technical limitations

Search coverage depends on the connected public-web index. This preview has no connected search index yet. Private accounts, locked profiles and access-controlled pages are outside the intended scope. Sunglasses, masks, heavy filters, extreme angles and missing source pages can limit recall. No result does not mean a photo has never appeared online.

Privacy, image retention and opt-out controls

In this preview, selected photos stay in browser memory and are never sent to a search processor. Delete a photo to clear the preview, or close the page. No biometric data is sold. A provider’s retention policy must be published before online searching is enabled.

Frequently asked questions

Can you use AI to identify a person?

AI can compare facial features and suggest visually similar images, but a match cannot establish someone’s identity. Review original sources, dates and independent context. Unrelated people can look alike, and errors are possible. Never treat a search result as proof of identity or permission to contact someone.

What is face recognition software?

Face recognition software analyzes patterns in facial images to compare one photo with another or with an image index. Systems vary in training, thresholds and coverage. Similarity scores are model outputs rather than verified identities, and image quality, pose, age and lighting can change results substantially.

Can Google do a facial recognition search?

Google Lens offers visual image search that can surface related pictures and contextual information. It should not be treated as a public identity verification service. Searching for a similar image differs from confirming who a person is, and any suggested source still requires careful, independent review.

How to locate a person with a picture?

A permitted photo may help you find public pages where similar images appear. Start with image provenance, inspect original pages and respect privacy and consent. A photo search cannot reliably reveal someone’s current location, contact information or identity, and it should never support stalking or harassment.

What are the limitations of facial recognition?

Blur, low resolution, occlusion, unusual angles, aging and image editing can reduce reliability. Coverage also depends on which public sources a search engine indexes. False positives and missed matches are possible, so a score should be interpreted with source context and should never determine consequential decisions alone.

Can PimEyes search social media?

PimEyes states that it excludes social media platforms and professional networks from its index. Its pricing FAQ explains that photos hosted exclusively on social media will not appear in results. Public copies on other eligible websites may be different sources; always check the original page and current documentation.
